"Colibr" is a Spanish word for hummingbird, many of which (more than 50 varieties) are found in Costa Rica. With a heart beating at over 10 times a second and wings that flap as fast as 40 times a second (and sometimes faster), their energy output is enormous. Hummingbirds must take in as much as half their body weight in nectar daily to supply their energy needs.
