Ryan Schenk obtained this unusual effect by using time exposure photography, and shining a flashlight on the ground as he walked around in front of the camera.
Ryan Schenk obtained this unusual effect by using time exposure photography, and shining a flashlight on the ground as he walked around in front of the camera.

Ryan Schenk wrote that after reading our tips on night photography, he took some really cool shots using ISO 100 film under a moon that was nearly full. He sent in three examples, one of which is shown here. Ryan calls it "Walking with flashlight." He wrote: I opened up the shutter, and then wandered around with a flashlight pointed at the ground. What a trip!

This photo was taken with a Pentax ZX-M using a Pentax 35-80mm SMC lens, writes Kat Callaway from McAllen, Texas. She took it as a "repeated form" project demonstration for her junior high photography class. I first thought the chain link gate in the distance spoiled the overall effect, she says, but then I realized this photo can also be used to show how much society has changed, that we need to use locked gates and fences to protect our children even at school. The students loved it, says Kat, because it was a new way of seeing something they see every day.

A good understanding of effective composition is something every photographer should strive for.

This is a very effective composition, with a break (the open gate) in the repititious pattern of the columns. Plenty of depth of field was needed for this photograph.

This view from atop the cathedral in Timosoa, Romania was captured by photographer, Mihai Albu.

Mihai Albu took this picture of Timisoara, the western Romanian city in which he lives. Mihai wrote: It was so hard for me to get in the Cathedral Tower about (86 meters in height) to make this beautiful picture, with my old Fujica ST 701 camera. Enjoy. Thanks, Mihai.

Julia from California captured this little girl's peaceful look of concentration. Using black-and-white photography contributed to the mood of the image. When you are photographing children, do what Julia did, and capture them candidly on film, when they are busy and interested, for pictures that will stand the test of time.

Candid photographs of children are far more interesting and revealing of character than those that are posed. This photograph effectively captures a moody glimpse into a child's world.

Low camera angle is the key to this picture's success. Shot against the light by Emil Onea of Romania, the bright flowers and blustery sky seem to give off a feeling of happiness and vitality.

Emil Onea, the Romanian photographer who took this attractive, low angled composition, was short and to-the-point in his message that accompanied his submission. He wrote, "a foto! named 'red points' emil onea romania." Not too sure what too make of that, but we like his photograph.

Asha Rajan of Karratha, Western Australia, made this exceptional photograph that she entitled "Alone in the wilderness.".
