The quetzal, found throughout Amazonia and also in the mountain or "cloud" rain forest of Central America, has been described by respected bird authorities as the most spectacular bird in the New World. With a body about 14 inches long, its tail feathers can reach as much as three feet in length. Its name derives from an old Mexican word for the bird's tail feathers, meaning "precious" or "beautiful."
