Poses for the ballerina must look dignified and portray the grace and precision of the ballet.
Ballet is a classical dance form that demands grace and precision. As the principal female dancer in a ballet company, the ballerina must be photographed with dignity. There are a number of approaches the photographer can take in making pictures of the ballet dancer.
Action pictures can be taken during the dance performance itself or during a rehearsal. This is the most difficult approach, since the photographer does not have complete control over the proceedings (as he or she would in a studio, for example). It calls for timing, a fast shutter speed, sufficient illumination, proper positioning, appropriate lens selection to fill the frame with the subject, knowledge of the dance itself, and luck. It is highly rewarding when it succeeds.
Candid pictures of dancers caught unawares during practice, lessons, rehearsals, warm-ups and breaks often result in moody images that capture the essence of the dance, and can have great artistic merit.
Posed pictures provide the photographer with the greatest control. Selection of appropriate poses is critical. The ballerina herself can be quite helpful in suggesting poses, but the inexperienced photographer may need to rely on a knowledgeable third party, such as a dance instructor or another experienced dancer, for variety in posing.
Ballerinas are generally in such excellent condition that they may be posed in physically-demanding positions.
OUR POSING GUIDES
If you are planning to photograph ballet dancers, you will find our Posing guides to be helpful in suggesting classical poses that are appropriate to the ballerina.
The images in our guides were photographed in a studio under the direction of an experienced ballet school operator, a top dancer in her own right, using conventional steps and gestures typical of the dance. Our model is an accomplished ballet student, with many performances to her credit.
There are three ballerina posing guides presented here. They do not attempt to show every pose that would suit the ballerina, but they do provide a good cross-section of poses that can be used by you "as-is" or to stimulate your creative processes in developing your own poses.
Fun and the feel of action are characteristics of Hip Hop poses.
HIP HOP POSES
We have also added a single page of twelve posing suggestions for the Hip Hop dancer. This form of dance has an almost unlimited number of poses, and our guide barely touches upon the possibilities. Nonetheless, we hope it will start you in the right direction to make good Hip Hop dancer pictures.
SEND US YOUR DANCE POSE SUGGESTIONS
You may take a terrific dance performer picture that you feel is truly representative of the ballet, of hip hop or some other form of dance. If you feel it would be of benefit to our viewers to see your image, we would welcome its submission.
