Wattle is the colloquial name for any tree in the Acacia family. There are more than 900 species of Acacia in Australia, making it the largest genus in the Australian flora. Golden wattle, Acacia pycnantha is Australia's national floral emblem. Australians who represent their nation in international sporting events usually wear green and gold, the country's national colors, which are said to be based on wattle flowers and foliage. The fine specimen shown here is probably Acacia dealbata.
