USE THEM FOR ANNOUNCEMENTS AND MORE

Engagement pictures are normally taken well in advance of the wedding. Ideally, prints of them will be available when you announce your engagement.

Most couples use them for:

  • newspaper notices,
  • other print announcements (for instance, an in-house newsletter at your place of work, a union or trade magazine, or a printed mail-out announcement),
  • to send to relatives and friends,
  • to display at your wedding reception and
  • for you to simply have a professionally-taken picture of your fiance on your mantle or in your wallet.
  • Copies can even be placed in your wedding album.

Note: Some newspapers (big city) may charge for a wedding announcement while others (small town) will not, and many may require you to submit your announcement and accompanying photographs as much as three or four months in advance of the wedding. Be aware that the announcement may not be printed for several weeks after its submission.

    Black & WHITE versus COLOR

Engagement pictures for newspaper announcements are preferably taken in black and white for print reproduction, however most color images - converted to black and white by the paper’s art department - will also do the job. You may want all your engagement pictures to be taken in black and white since it can convey emotion and mood so well. But, most couples opt for color, particularly for their outdoors pictures, and are pleased with the results.

YOU SHOULD HAVE A CHOICE OF PICTURES

Your photographer can be creative with your engagement pictures, taking outdoors shots in a scenic location, against a pleasant backdrop of your choice or taking more formal studio shots. Studio pictures don't need to be formal, though. They can be relaxed and fun-looking, if you wish.

Candids, close-ups (together and individually) and pretty much anything else you decide are not out of the question. The sky's the limit, and you are in the driver's seat. How do you wish your pictures to be taken to announce your upcoming wedding?

Both the couple and the photographer should use their imaginations. Have fun during the photography session, and allow your personalities and feelings for each other to come out in the pictures. Bring a change of clothes to add variety - finer clothing for the more formal pictures and casual wear for candid shots.

ENGAGEMENT PICTURES ARE A GOOD TEST OF YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER

Engagement pictures can serve another purpose, too. They can be a test of your photographer’s ability to capture the style of pictures you want for your wedding.

Based on your experience during the session and when you view your engagement pictures, they can help you decide if you want this photographer to shoot your wedding. If your pictures are satisfactory, if they show creativity and capture your personalities, and if the session was relaxed and enjoyable, there is a very good chance your wedding pictures by the same photographer will be successful.
