When should we look for a wedding photographer?

Once you have set the date

Begin your search for a wedding photographer as soon as possible after you have set a date for the wedding. Starting your search for a photographer a year or more before your wedding may seem premature, but many good photographers accept early bookings and may not be available for your particular date even if you call six or nine months beforehand. Ideally, you will have a wedding budget in place before you meet with a photographer.

There are a number of reasons why a photographer may already be committed to another assignment on your wedding date, even though you call him or her months in advance. For instance, when a photographer is shooting a wedding, there are often engaged couples among the guests. You can be sure they are taking careful note of all the proceedings in order to better plan their own function. If they like the photographer’s style, they may ask the photographer that day if he or she is available to take pictures of their wedding next year. It is not unheard of for good wedding photographers to receive bookings a year or more in advance in this manner.

Your selected date may be a popular day for weddings. If you decide on a weekend wedding during the peak season in your area, there will likely be more than just your nuptial event taking place that day. Since most photographers operate on a first-come-first served basis, you would be well-advised to confirm your preferred photographer’s services as early as possible.

The process of selecting the right photographer for your wedding can take a good deal of time in viewing the photographer’s work and in finalizing the wedding photography agreement. Bear in mind, too, that you may decide against the first one or two photographers whom you contact, and you should allow plenty of time to find one who meets your needs and budget.

If your wedding is taking place in a small community, the selection of qualified photographers may be limited. Booking the community’s best wedding photographer early will provide you with peace of mind. You don’t want to have to settle for second best or have to pay the additional expense of bringing in a photographer from another area because you didn’t book early enough locally.

It may take longer than you expect to find a photographer whose style and personality suit you.
