After matting, comes framing. Remember to make the frame fit the picture. Do not cut a photo to fit a frame.

TYPES OF MOLDING

Aluminum. This is the most flexible of materials for framing as there are many different styles, colors and finishes to choose from. Aluminum is also economical and has good protective qualities. Frames can also be made from other metals, and are available in a wide variety of tones, finishes and in numerous different profiles.

Wood. Wood adds depth and richness to a finished picture, but is also expensive, and may tend to emit acids that, over time, can harm a photograph.

Although wood and aluminum are the most popular, frames can be made from many other materials. Two that are also popular include:

Polystyrene. This is becoming a more popular, and cheaper, alternative to wood frames. It has the look of wood and is environmentally friendly. There are many different styles and colors to choose from.

Plastic. This type of molding is just as flexible but its strength, particularly for large frames, is doubtful.

Frames can also be made from a combination of any of the above materials, plus several other materials, such as fabric, for instance. The choice is endless, limited only by your imagination.

Molding strips usually ship with a protective plastic covering. It's a good idea to leave it on until you're ready to use one.
