I have the Canon 50D and I am a beginner. I am mostly shooting formal pics like for dances. (very staged) What lens is best to get a full body length shot (with room at the bottom for event stamp)? Right now I feel like I have to be so far away from the subjects and its just not as plain as I would like it to be. I don't want it to be distorted either. Right now I have the 28-55. Any suggestions?

Ok I will check into it. I just obviously wasn't doing something right bc I had to stand back so far from the subjects. Thanks a bunch

I've asked a friend who's working with a canon at the moment and he suggested EF 70-200f/4L. Could be worth checking it out!

The 50d has a crop sensor, this has the effect of magnifing the focal length of the lens used, the 28-55 mm isn't very wide angle on the wide end of the zoom, as Kenny says you might be better off with the 17-40mm (or something similar)

I like the 50mm 1.4, but I also use the 35mm a fair bit, I like the extra width. I used to only use prime lens, but now I find the modern zoomz so good it's quicker and easier most of the time to use those.
