Hi, I recently received some E-mailed photos from a friend in Australia which are in the form of .MIX file which I've never come across before. Can anyone suggest a way of viewing these files (preferably without me having to buy some expensive new software). Cheers

I think they are a "picture it" file ,so go here and see if you can download a viewer. If not get your friends to resend them in .jpg format. Maybe there is also a web based photo hosting site (MSN ?) that will except that format.

Paula - Here are some suggestion I have that may be (cross your fingers) a quick and easy solution to your problem.
1) try opening MS Paint minimized (do not have it take up your entire screen). Now take the icon of one of your .mix files and drag it into the empty MS Paint window and release. See if this will allow you to view the file. You can then choose File and Save As.
2) first make a copy of any one of the .mix files and then try right mouse clicking on the file. From the menu that appears choose Rename. Change the extension from .mix to .jpg or .bmp and then press the enter key or take your mouse and click anywhere outside of the icon. Now you should be able to open the file and it should (again crossing fingers) open like any other image file supported by MS.
It may not be that simple but sometimes it is the simple that is overlooked. Give it a try and let me know if that worked. Best of luck to ya.

To my knowledge there is no free viewer. Picture It will all you to create a executable slide viewer to email to someone, or you can save the file as a jpg and as well as other types. The mix file format only opens with PictureIT. I would confirm this with Microsoft. How many mix files do you have?

Can't leave this one alone. .....This is a link to the statement referred to earlier in the thread on the MSN PictureIt site. The statement is just above the photo to the right of the heading "JPEG Interchange Format". PICTUREIT MIX COMPATABILITY STATEMENT
So, it looks like we have three options: 1) the sender should resend the image in jpg or another file format for which you have software to open; 2) sender resend as a slideshow which would require the steps at this link PICTUREIT VIEWER or 3) ask a PictureIT user to convert the file for you. I think Pashan offered to assist. I too can assist. ([email protected]) How many files?

Hi there. I was hoping you wouldn't mind sending me one of your .mix files. I would like to attempt to get it to work. If the photos are too private, I completely understand, but just wanting to help and I always love a good challenge. If you agree please send the photos to [email protected]

Microsoft PhotoDraw is now obsolete. MS stopped making PhotoDraw last year (2001). For those of you who do not know .mix files are created by MS Photodraw. I am still looking into a converter for the .mix files. My initial test went unsuccessful. Battle lost, but war is not over. I am pressing forward.

If you do not have ofice xp professional and would like to import picture it files to your office document go to this web site http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q212265
and update your graphics import fileter for office 97/2000/2002.
After you have updated your program, you can then use the earlier tip about importing to word and then saving as a web page.

Ok to whomever wrote that offensive post, for one I do not appreciate you coming into our forum and defacing it. We uphold a standard that we intend to keep. This is a place where everyone can come and share their feelings, concerns, opions and knowledge along with being able to ask questions and do so uninhibitedly and most importantly, tactfully. We give respect to one and all and in return demand that same respect. You may talk like this amongst others, but we will not tolerate it here. Know that we appreciate what you have to say, but not when you use rude and offensive language. It only shows immaturity at any level. I am quite sure that you have a much larger vocabulary. Please use it or do not post at all. I have alerted the admin here at PhotographyTips to have your posting removed.
NOTE FROM FORUM ADMINISTRATOR: The foregoing message may at first seem to be out of place, because the posting to which it refers was deleted due to its offensive language. This message, however, was and is still appropriate since it indicates how strongly our Forum participants feel about preserving the friendly, wholesome, "family" atmosphere that has developed and is nurtured here. I am grateful to Karl for bringing the problem posting to our attention so that it could be quickly dealt with.

Often times, Microsoft products aren't backwards compatible (they rewrite the programs so they're not). What you might look for is a program that can convert your .mix files into JPEGs or the like. Otherwise, you could try importing all of them at the same time to Word (as was already suggested) and saving them all at the same time too. It shouldn't take long at all.

Anybody used to code? There are all the things donr in the MS Office graphic converters, just the interface is missing, to override this boggling office! I'd have done it if i could... It could be even sold somehow!
Office is made of compiled C++ code, so to change it's structure you'd have to reverse engineer it to get the source, then read it all through to figure out how it works, rewrite the code, and then recompile it. Not for the faint of heart! And selling it would be quite illegal.
To Paul: You probably just need to restart your computer.

I have found what apears to be a .mix viewer for free on the internet.
http://web.starman.ee/rost/ra/?page=25
I do not have any .mix files so I can not check it out. If any one does try it and it works, please let the rest of us know.

I didn't see your email but here it is. I had to rename it (taking the .jpg) out of the name. Then Picture It 2001 to convert. Hope this helps.

You best have lots of RAM if you want to convert that many files using Word. I'm sure there is a Visual Basic module or something out there that can read MIX files.
