I've photographed Muay Thai and kickboxing in rings but last Saturday was my first time shooting mixed martial arts in a cage. The mat was yellow and reflected a fair amount of light. The yellow also caused me problems with skin tones. Adjustments to back off on yellow tints did not result in good skin tones so I opted to leave some of the yellow in. My photo editor was happy with the photos and that is the most important thing.

Here is one of the trainer getting into the fighter's head between rounds. This trainer is a great guy and really prepares his fighters well.

In the corner:

John Holland & Shihan Simpson

Sizing each other up:

John Holland vs Travis Wynn

**Edited to remove a photo after someone pointed out something that could potentially be viewed as vulgar. It was not my intent to offend anyone. Sorry**

And a little hugging (LOL!):

Nolan Wisser vs Tim Wagner

Shooting here is like shooting in a cave. The yellow mat helped somewhat compared to the blue mat that is used when they use the ring. All photos are at either ISO3200 or ISO6400, f/2.8, and no post process NR applied.

yeah that yellow really does reflect - especially the guy with his back to the camera in the 3rd image.

Great shots for ambient light!!

Kathy - I try to avoid using flash in these situations. I just don't want to take even the tiniest chance of affecting the outcome even though fighters have told me they are so focused when in the ring that they don't notice things like flash.

Kenny - the cage was almost like chain link fencing so I put my lens right up to the cage and shot through the openings. I admit that I took a step back a couple times as the fighters fell towards me.

Just as a side note - the promoter had his own photographer there. You can see some of this guy's photos here --> Premier Cage Fight II

Nice work as usual Alice. As a side note I would rather view your work any day. Cheers.

Jumping in late - I have to agree the pics I saw were better than the event photographer. I shoot for a couple of promotions in my area and for the most part using a flash is allowed. That said I am switching to no flash - I think it gives a more dramatic look and feel if you can get away with it. Most of the venues are have terrible lighting a mixture of sources and just flat. If yo ucan get above the cage it is nice, but lately I have been enjoying the freedom of shooting through the cage and being mobile to catch the walk ins; once the fights start no going to the locker room - get those before hand. On my web site the ring girl folder gets the most views - if they are aspiring models they often want to buy any good head shots. The promoters I shoot for all have the fighters sign releases.

Here is a link to some of my MMA photos.
