Praying mantis

The praying mantis (or praying mantid) is a carnivorous insect that holds its front forelegs, which are equipped with rows of sharp spikes that it uses to quickly reach out, grasp and hold its prey, as if it were praying. It is in fact "preying," mainly on other insects, but sometimes (with larger varieties of mantis) on small birds and reptiles.
