This image presents a shrimp cocktail (actually, two of them) in a simple manner that clearly shows that they are high quality without overdoing it. The lighting is excellent. The shrimp are just as a diner would want them. It's a classic presentation that says good things about the establishment that serves them. And that establishment is the Alley Grille in the Greektown Casino, John Cumming's client.

John says "As with all images with this client, we shot in the restaurant to use the ambience of the dining area as a backdrop for the food. In this case, we chose the wine room."

John used a Mamiya 645D camera with a Phase 1 P40 digital back.

"This appetizer is served with just the shredded lettuce in a martini glass with cocktail sauce on top," says John. "I suggested adding crushed ice to diminish the slightly overwhelming green tone that the lettuce was creating."

John says, "Diane Long, stylist with Long On Style, cut open a new disposable diaper to use its crystals, which she soaked in water for a few minutes to create the 'ice'. The effect was quite realistic and, because it was unable to melt, lasted a long time."
