Hi, I recently received some E-mailed photos from a friend in Australia which are in the form of .MIX file which I've never come across before. Can anyone suggest a way of viewing these files (preferably without me having to buy some expensive new software). Cheers

I think they are a "picture it" file ,so go here and see if you can download a viewer. If not get your friends to resend them in .jpg format. Maybe there is also a web based photo hosting site (MSN ?) that will except that format.

I'm sure you can find a FREE program that will open that particular type of file and some can even convert them to a different format. Check www.shareware.com and search for "picture viewers" or "photo vieweres". I'm sure several will come up that can open the file and some of them will be free.
good luck

Did you ever figure out how to view those .mix files?
Microsoft PhotoDraw creates .mix files for sure. You
can probably get a viewer for that type of file if you
haven't already.

I downloaded the MSN photo viewer, but it does not open .mix files. The MSN Picture IT site, states that only Picture it will open .mix files.

Paula -
Here are some suggestion I have that may be (cross your fingers) a quick and easy solution to your problem.

1) try opening MS Paint minimized (do not have it take up your entire screen). Now take the icon of one of your .mix files and drag it into the empty MS Paint window and release. See if this will allow you to view the file. You can then choose File and Save As.

2) first make a copy of any one of the .mix files and then try right mouse clicking on the file. From the menu that appears choose Rename. Change the extension from .mix to .jpg or .bmp and then press the enter key or take your mouse and click anywhere outside of the icon. Now you should be able to open the file and it should (again crossing fingers) open like any other image file supported by MS.

It may not be that simple but sometimes it is the simple that is overlooked. Give it a try and let me know if that worked. Best of luck to ya.

I had the same problem and fixed it by renaming the file. I changed the .mix to .fpx .

Hi, I didn't see where you got a definitive answer to opening a .MIX file. Does anyone have the URL for a website to download a free viewer ? Does a free viewer even exist ? Thanks..Ryan

To my knowledge there is no free viewer. Picture It will all you to create a executable slide viewer to email to someone, or you can save the file as a jpg and as well as other types. The mix file format only opens with PictureIT. I would confirm this with Microsoft. How many mix files do you have?

Can't leave this one alone. .....This is a link to the statement referred to earlier in the thread on the MSN PictureIt site. The statement is just above the photo to the right of the heading "JPEG Interchange Format". PICTUREIT MIX COMPATABILITY STATEMENT

So, it looks like we have three options:
1) the sender should resend the image in jpg or another file format for which you have software to open;
2) sender resend as a slideshow which would require the steps at this link
PICTUREIT VIEWER
or 3) ask a PictureIT user to convert the file for you. I think Pashan offered to assist. I too can assist. (GadgetgalKY@hotmail.com) How many files?

Microsoft Image eXtensions (.mix) is a closed proprietary (non-standard) format used by Microsoft's PictureIt! and PhotoDraw. It is the default format for working on images in these programs. However, completed photos should be saved in an open standard format, such as JPEG File Interchange Format (.jpg), so they can be opened by a wide variety of other programs, such as web browsers.
The two most comprehensive graphic conversion programs are Logipole's Konverter and LemkeSoft's Graphic Converter. Neither will import .mix files. Microsoft will not divulge the file format. That's typical of the company -- they want newbies to lock their photos into the format and then propagate it to others by sending them as email attachments.
If these photos have been sent to you as attachments, then I suggest you contact the perpetrator and educate them about the use of open standards on the Internet....

I am facing similar promblem and the pics are quite personal (not nudie) otherwisem, I would have asked anyone to convert them for me.

But Please suggest me where can I find Picture IT to view them.

Thanks

Need to convert .mix files to .jpg quickly and without needing PictureIt? I figured out the easiest way to do it:

1. Have the said .mix file saved on your computer somewhere. "My Documents" is easy enough since it'll only be temporary.

2. Open up Microsoft Word and click on the "Insert" menu.

3. Click on "Picture" and then "From File..."

4. Find the .mix file that you have saved on your computer and insert it into the document. Now you should be able to view the image as a part of your Word document.

5. Now, in order to save it as a jpeg, just go to the "File" menu and click on "Save As."

6. Save the document as a "Web Page" (again, let's say in "My Documents")

7. You won't notice anything different, but then go to where you saved the web page document (in this case, your "My Documents" folder) and you'll see that there's the web page file along with a folder titled "filename_files." Open this folder and inside you'll find the .mix image saved as a jpeg. Then feel free to rename the image and place it wherever you'd like.

Please note that this has only been tested on Windows XP Professional. If anyone can try this on other Windows formats and see if it works in more or less the same way, then please post your findings here.

Hope this helps.

Tried opening in Word (Windows 2K w/ Office 2K Pro) and no luck! It asks you to choose a format to convert it from and then gives you an error when you choose Picture It!
Microsoft strikes again....

Hi there. I was hoping you wouldn't mind sending me one of your .mix files. I would like to attempt to get it to work. If the photos are too private, I completely understand, but just wanting to help and I always love a good challenge. If you agree please send the photos to karlj_x700@mailcity.com

I have a bunch of Photodraw .mix files burned on a cd. I reformatted my PC for various reasons and do not have the Photodraw software anymore. I cannot get anything to open these .mix files or to convert them. I do not want to purchase the Photodraw software. Does a convertor exist? Thanks in advance for any help.

Microsoft PhotoDraw is now obsolete. MS stopped making PhotoDraw last year (2001). For those of you who do not know .mix files are created by MS Photodraw. I am still looking into a converter for the .mix files. My initial test went unsuccessful. Battle lost, but war is not over. I am pressing forward.
