Peter, I assume Pentax has supplied you with a PS plugin for RAW files so you can open them in Elements, but to be honest the plugin is very poor and gives minimum control over what you can adjust.

I would suggest that you download either of the following free raw conversion programs and use them instead of Elements.

1. Pixmantec's RAW Shooter Essentials
2. ILS' SILKYPIX Developer Studio.

Of the two the first one is the best and most controllable.

Procedure is as follows:

1. Shoot RAW
2. Connect camera to PC
3. Use either Pentax's software or One of the two mentioned above to download pictures in a folder.
4. Open picture to carry out adjustments
5. Save as TIFF or JPEG
6. Open saved file in Elements for final adjustments
7. Save final version in separate folder (do on overwrite original file at any stage otherwise it is lost forever)
8. Post you results

Anything else, just ask (or come to Greece this summer and will discuss it over an ouzo and some grilled octopus )

Peter,

Silkypix download site

RawShooter Essentials download page

Try both and see which one suits you better.

As for the ouzo and occy will hold you to your word next year. Will have some pickled and some dried so you can choose.

To save to a particular folder, click the batck tab, then click the naming and output tab (red arrow) a box will then give you options, clicl the dot (blue arrow) and a browser will open for you to brows where you want to save to.

I'm slightly confused by the last part, raw shooter isn't ment for working on jpeg's only RAW files, you set your ajustments on the correct image tab for that. Wayne

Appreciate that swanseamale ..Didnt make myself too clear with that last bit..What i meant was to save the file to eg a jpeg file after having manipulated it..
One good file for saving and one jpeg for otherwise like posting..
Will get there i'm sure, plenty of patience and willingness to learn..
Cheers n thank you..

Peter , in the batch convert tab, click the "more options" button. There you will see there is a "file format" drop down menu. From there you can select either tiff or jpeg. If you select jpeg then you also activate the drop down menu just below it which controls the quality.

Hope this helps.

Peter, you need to use the image size function in Elements. (sorry don't have elements installed and cannot remember in which drop down menu it is).

Just open the image and then go ...>Image Size and resize it to 800X600 px max.

Does anyone know if Nikon's "Picture Project" is better than RAW Shooter for converting RAW images? I have PS CS and, of course, by itself you cannot convert or work with RAW images. Any Nikonians with advice on this?

Picture Projet gives only raw conversion to jpeg with no control at all. You need the Nikon Capture Editor to be able to control the wy the conversion is done.

I don't know what control you have with CS since I'm using CS2, but you better download the RawShooter or Silkypix programs (see my earlier msg for the links) if you want to have full control over the conversion process.

CS does open RAW files all you need is the download from Adobe for the latest cameras... I always convert my RAW files to DNG files as they take up less space... I also use RawShooter...

Ahhh, I see. How much does Nikon Capture Editor cost? I just got RAW Shooter and was wondering if it was worth it to get the Nikon Capture Editor or not? What do you think?

Also, I just went to the Nikon site and saw they offer a 4.2 version of Nikon Capture Editor. Does anyone know how long you get this for?
