It used to be kind of fun around here. A few regulares posting daily and a few others in and out every couple of days . The last few weeks have not been worth the time to check things out.
What's going on?????????????

It hasn't been the same on here since the changes a while back, I don't come on much these days, partly because it's been dead and mostly because it's a busy time of year for us wedding togs.
I have to admit I hated the changes myself, the stupid green links drive me mad, I can see Dans point of view but theres always the danger that people will leave.
It's sad to see a once great forum so quiet.

Hi everyone,
It has been a while since we changed topic categories. Perhaps it is time once again to shake up the Forums a bit. If anyone should have recommendations or suggestions for changes or improvements, please let me know by posting them in this thread or by communicating directly by email - dan@photographytips.com.

I used to lurk and lately I haven't even been doing that. I must admit it was a certain poster that really killed it for me. I see Vee and Savina on facebook tho. =)
I guess you could say life is keeping me rather busy. I've been doing some photography. I even have my own site finally- Paparazzi Cathy
I'm sure I'll be back around soon.

Well, I stop by and have a look every once in awhile, but I am not supposed to get upset.
Now I ask you, How can anyone be a good forum participator without getting upset occasionally??
I miss all the folks here, and the many that have simply gone by the wayside or to other forums.
I remember when this was a really busy forum with a lot of great photographers contributing here daily.
I remember my fascination growing as I watched Paparazzi and Crankypants grow from rank beginners to the very top notch photographers they are today.
I used to submit images regularly and they were often attempts at artistic nudes and I got many great helpful critiques from photographers much better than I.
I even received constructive pointers on my nudes from Reverand Gary, who himself, was ran off by one of the popular know it alls that almost dominated this site for a long time.
I remember also the idiotic critiques I got from some that look at Nudity as something nasty, and know absolutely nothing about lighting, and have no artistic creativity themselves at all, but were way to willing to make derogatory comments rather than constructive critiques. At one point I had images hanging in a very highly respected gallery and those same images were commented on here badly by a rank beginner.
Unfortunately, those people abound in every photographic forum on the internet.
I do think this is still one of the best photography forums around, particularly for beginners wanting to learn, and one good thing about the membership dwindling is it is weeding out the discontents.
It is about time some format changes were made, because as Wayne said, "It has gone down rapidly since the current format was put in place".
I really don't have any idea what Dan can do to rejuvenate the site, but I have no doubt he will come up with something.
Much of the Decline can easily be put to the upcoming popularity of "Facebook", "Myspace', and other networking sites that give everyone many more places, and people, to both get information from and show their images to.
I think a definite help would be for all that have past participators e-mail,or even snail mail addresses, to send them a note telling them they are missed.
This site has never been a cliquish site so I do not think that is part of the problem.
I have watched E practically carrying this site all by himself for a long time and though we don't see eye to eye on everything, and that is good, I deeply respect his opinions and willingness to help anyone that needs it. Kudos to you E.
I greatly miss seeing the Paparazzi posts on everything from housecleaning to her beautiful photography. Cathy get back in here you are badly needed.
Many are no longer here because they have either given up on photography and moved on to something else or simply just got tired of some of the long time participators ripping them apart and went to another forum without the grouchy comments.
I have always been a very strong advocate of the beginner no matter how stubborn they were and witnessed first hand how Mary (Mommyfor4) was driven away by some that were simply tired of telling her over and over what to do, while she kept making the same mistakes, instead of just not making any comment at all.
Throughout the many years I have been here there have been many "Know-it-alls" that have driven others away by crudely critiquing their images.
One thing I think Dan should do is either monitor this site regularly or ask someone that is here regularly to watch for derogatory comments and lock them before they get nasty.
By nasty, I mean before they start attacking others personally.
Well E, you wanted to know where everyone went and I can only speak for myself.

It takes allot to run me off any forum. I left one because a moderator jumped all over me and then after I defended my self another moderator sent me a message telling me to clean up my act. ???? Then they went and started apply different rules to different people on the fly as they felt the whim to do so.
I've been attacked here as well but not like that, nor by Dan. I just chose to ignore that persons t and soon they left.
For topic areas I think the "Business of Photography" needs to go. Maybe a general discussion area, Portraits & People (Instead of Studio) and that could be portraits of pets. Maybe a transportation section, nature scenic & wild life too.

Let me add Off Topic and Wedding to the list. As popularity grows again these will get used. Also consider if Engagement should go in Wedding or People/Portrait.

I have been reading this thread for a while. It's not the first of its kind in my memory and I suppose not the last. There are quite a few very fine photographers here. Our pros are top notch, knowledgeable and generally helpful. Our amateurs are bright and generally quick to learn. Of course I speak in generalities because not everyone fits these molds. But thats OK. Thats what makes watching our PTip.com friends grow more worthwhile
I consider myself a knowledgeable amateur if not a good practitioner. I joined the forum hoping to learn from my mistakes and from the constructive criticism of others. I try to pass along my thoughts on how to improve a photograph when I think I have something to add. Often others have disagreed with me and I often learn from that, too.
For me the problem is twofold. First, too often, critiques are nothing more than platitudes, You get better all the time, Great color and the ubiquitous, Super shot, ______. Praise is fine and often warranted but I prefer critiques that not only praise but instruct. Super shot, _____. Next time you may want to try ___________. Or, I think you might have concentrated on the leading lines, etc.
Secondly, and more personally, too many of my posts go without comment unless I specifically request it. I am not as skilled as E. or Cranky or KennyMc. I need to hear what I am doing wrong and right. But if I get no or little feed back then there is no reason for me to post my photos. Im sure others feel the same way. If everyone were satisfied with what they get out of this forum, little green words or not, there would be more activity.

Joel,,, I tend to agree that the "good shot" feed back isn't helpful. I have to confess that at times I don't comment because the shot is good as posted so nothing to say beyond that.
You are also right that this is not the first "where'd everyone go" thread. But in the over 7 years I've been here I don't think I've seen it as dead as we do now.
Time to infuse some live in here and maybe some of the old favorites will return.

E/Joel: I think you are both right, and as I said I think a bit of the problem lies with all of the networking sites that have cropped up.
Maybe one of the new topics should be "Image Critique" where images could be posted and critiqued.
Many people just want to put up images for all to see and are not necessarily interested in a critique and there should be a "Pictures I like" topic or something like that.
I belong to a Model site and there is a "critique" section and it works very well. Images put up for critique are critiqued by anyone wishing to really say what they think of the image as well as give pointers that they think would improve the image. There is very little of the "Nice Shot" "great image" type of critique. This type of a category though, has to be entered into by those with thick enough skin to read and accept constructive criticisms.
I put up images there often for critique by members, and when I get a critique, before I answer it, I click on the members portfolio to see if their photography warrants any kind of answer. If their portfolio consists of all cell phone images their comments are just ignored.
Like I mentioned before a lot of beginners have been driven from this site by members making un called for remarks regarding their images.
If expansion here is what the members really want, more care should be taken with the treatment of those new people.
