Spent some time at the local zoo yesterday for a "Penguin Party". It may have been a party for the penguins but the big buzz was about the 2 alligators who had just gone on exhibit that day. Not sure why people think baby alligators would make good pets. They definitely aren't going to stay small. These alligators are on loan from a rescue group. Alligators are cute in a prehistoric way but I was glad there were 2 fences between this guy and me. I'm not sure what the zoo will do with them when they get bigger or during the winter when it gets way too cold for alligators to survive outdoors in PA.
There are no laws at the state level in Pennsylvania against owning or selling non-native reptiles except that you cannot release them into the wild but there may be laws on the municipal level.

Here all the golf courses come equipped with one or two. They're really no problem until they get really large, unless people feed them, which they do. "Madge and Bill are here from Ohio, show'em how we feed the alligator." People keep the most amazing things as pets. Every been to Petsmart and see the scorpions for sale/

Victor - people never cease to amaze me. I just can't imagine why people would want to feed the gators and encourage them to stay around and it totally boggles my mind that anyone would want to keep an alligator as a pet.

I used to have a caiman as a pet, thats like an alligator,or Louisiana yard dog as we like to call them here, but much more foul tempered. They aren't really good for much other than looking at,not a pet that really wants to be showered with love and affection.
